Minnesota Republicans to issue alternate roads plan

ST. PAUL — Minnesota House and Senate Republicans are ready to release a transportation plan they’ll push as an alternative to a hefty proposal offered by Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton.

Top GOP leaders were to describe the contents of their 10-year funding plan on Monday. For weeks, legislative Republicans have railed against Dayton’s call for a gas-tax increase to pay for new road and bridge work and a higher metropolitan sales tax for mass transit. They have said they would redirect existing tax dollars to road construction.

There is general agreement among lawmakers of both parties that a substantial new investment is needed to keep Minnesota’s transportation backbone from worsening.
