50 years ago: 1965
• Ken Stauch of the Albert Lea wrestling team finished in fourth at 112 pounds in the Minnesota state wrestling tournament.
• In the District 2 Minnesota basketball tournament, Albert Lea was defeated 84-67 by Austin. Wayne Lerud led the Packers with 27 points, and the Tigers were led by Jim Bratvold with 33 points. Austin won the District 2 title with a 79-68 victory over Blooming Prairie. Denny Kruckeberg scored 23 points for Blooming Prairie.
• In the District 5 basketball playoffs, Wells High School defeated Winnebago 61-45. Jeff Miller scored 20 points for the Wild Cats. Wells lost in the semifinals to Trimont 59-57. Tom Colby scored 15 points and John Franke, 14, for the Wild Cats.
• Members of the Albert Lea gymnastics team who participated at the Minnesota state tournament included Paul Field, Larry Petersen, Chuck Nelson, Jim Becker, Rog Neist, Dan Gasca, Dick Boyum, John Goodmanson and Doug Peak.
25 years ago: 1990
• Ryan Anderson of Albert Lea won the local, district and state competition in the annual Elks Hoop Shoot Contest and advanced to the regional competition at Iowa City, Iowa.
• The Albert Lea boys’ basketball team lost its opening-round game in Region 1AA to Rosemount 89-73.
• NRHEG, champion of District 2A, defeated Austin Pacelli 58-55. Tyler Peterson scored 19 points and Steve Johnson, 17, for NRHEG.
10 years ago: 2005
• The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team won the Class A consolation title 9-1 over Little Falls. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Quinn Ellingson, 4, Cory Ellertson, 2, Dustin Arendt, Tony Dugstad and Beau Larson.
• The Albert Lea boys’ basketball team defeated Faribault 51-44 to win the section in Class AAA and advance to the Minnesota state tournament. The Tigers were led by Mike Behrends with 17 points and Parker Skophammer with 14.
• The Albert Lea 200-yard medley relay team placed third at the Minnesota state swimming tournament and the Tigers finished in sixth place overall. Members of the 200 yd. medley relay were Ethan Berg, Ben Schreiber, Josh Elwood and Josh Anderson.
