Despite wins at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles, the Albert Lea boys’ tennis team could not extend its two-match winning streak.

Taylor Herfindahl won 6-1, 6-2 in the top singles spot, but the Tigers lost 5-2 Thursday against Winona at Albert Lea.

“Herfindahl played one of his best matches of the year at No. 1 singles,” said Tigers coach Tom Dyrdal. “He played smart and with excellent control of his strokes.”

Albert Lea’s No. 2 doubles team, Andy Woitas and Austin Dulitz, won 6-2, 6-1. Dyrdal said the duo has been consistent.

“Woitas and Dulitz continued their strong play, winning their ninth match of the year,” he said. “They are on a roll right now.”

Schafer Overgaard battled through a sore hamstring but lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, Dyrdal said.

“The guys did what we asked of them,” he said. “They played hard and stayed positive throughout the match. It was a fun match to watch with quality play from both teams.”

Next, Albert Lea (6-6, 4-6 Big Nine) will host Stewartville at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

The Tigers’ JV team improved its record to 10-2 with a 9-4 win over Winona.
