The members of the Una Vocis Choral Ensemble of Mason City come from many walks of life — farmers, physicians, music educators, stay-at-home moms and more. But they sing of “One of Voice” or “Una Vocis.”

This auditioned adult choir will present its annual spring concert, Nexus, at 7 p.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. A reception will follow in Bethany Hall at the church. The public is encouraged to attend, with an offering collected.

Founded in 2005 by Artistic Director Dennis Lee, Una Vocis has grown from 28 to 39 singers, many of whom hail from area towns as small as a couple hundred citizens.

The choir is celebrating its 10th anniversary season by commissioning and premiering a new work by renowned composer Ola Gjeilo, a Grammy Award winner. This lush work for voices, piano and strings, entitled “Negative Spaces,” speaks to the creative process and features lyrics written for the occasion by contemporary poet Charles Anthony Silvestri, who has penned the lyrics for several works by composer Eric Whitacre.

In addition to the Gjeilo commission, members of Una Vocis will perform Frank Martin’s a cappella “Mass for Double Choir” as well as two a cappella works, Gjeilo “Second Eve” and Anton Bruckner’s “Os Justi.” Daniel Elder’s “Tempest Rhapsody” will feature Una Vocis accompanist Mary Jane Crail on piano.

Crail will accompany the Gjeilo commission on piano with string accompaniment by local talent Dennis Root, Jana Root, Tara Dean and Tyler Beemer on violin; Pat Guetzko and Kathy Rogotzke on viola; Ken Bahls on cello and James Shaman on bass.

CDs of Una Vocis will be available for purchase during intermission and the post-concert reception. Both the church and fellowship hall are handicap accessible.
