Nyenhuis receives scholarship
Western Fraternal Life Lodge No. 44 Hayward member Elise Nyenhuis received the $1,000 Western Fraternal Life National Community/Vocational/Tech School Scholarship.
Nyenhuis attends Riverland Community College in the education program and is interested in teaching special education. She feels people are put on this earth to help each other and to make the world a better place. She wants to be a teacher who makes a difference in the lives of her students.
Western Fraternal Life Association recognizes the need for higher education and the increasing cost of obtaining this goal. The association established this member benefit to help its members grow into future leaders. Twenty-five $1,000 scholarships are awarded annually to qualified members attending college or vocational programs.
Western Fraternal Life is a not-for-profit financial services organization that gives back to the communities where members live and work. Other member benefits include disaster relief, family benefits, orphan and newborn benefits and member discounts.
Local students among those to graduate from MSU Moorhead
Minnesota State University of Moorhead awarded degrees to more than 940 students during its spring commencement program on May 15. Among those to graduate were Ciara Christenson of Freeborn who received her bachelor’s degree in exercise science, Rachel Friedman of Albert Lea who received her bachelor’s degree in elementary inclusive education with Magna Cum Laude honors, Dana Jacobs of Albert Lea who received her bachelor’s degree in psychology and Jessica Stenzel of New Richland who received her bachelor’s degree in studio art.
Students graduate from Waldorf College
Two area students graduated from Waldorf College during their commencement ceremony on May 9. Amber Bergland of Albert Lea received her bachelor’s degree in business with a minor in English. Alyse DeVries of Lake Mills received her bachelor’s degree in biology.
Students graduate from Minnesota West Community and Technical College
Three area students graduated from Minnesota West Community and Technical College during their May commencement ceremonies. These students were Peggy Benson of Albert Lea, Shawn Johnson-Madison of Glenville and Laura Peterson of Clear Lake.
Creighton University announces graduates
More than 1,700 degrees were conferred during Creighton University’s commencement ceremonies on May 16 at CenturyLink Center in Omaha. Among those receiving their diplomas were Amy Horejsi of Albert Lea who received her bachelor’s degree in nursing and Andrew Klick of Albert Lea who received his master’s degree in business administration and a doctorate degree in pharmacy.
Erdahl receives scholarship
Hallie Erdahl of Lake Mills received the Kathryn Bell-Seidel Scholarship from the Iowa State University College of Human Sciences. Erdahl is a junior studying apparel, merchandising and design at Iowa State.
The Iowa State University College of Human Sciences and its academic departments awarded more than $1 million in student scholarships and awards for the 2015-16 academic year.
Glenville student receives scholarship
South Dakota State University recently announced that Samuel Johnson of Glenville will receive The William Kohlmeyer Scholarship. Johnson, who will be a sophomore this fall, is the son of David and Sandy Johnson. He is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in agricultural business.
Bethany Lutheran College announces dean’s list
Erick Anderson and Taylor Friehl were both named to the dean’s list at Bethany Lutheran College for the spring 2014-15 academic school year. Anderson is the son of Mark and Teresa Anderson of Albert Lea. Friehl is the daughter of Roy Friehl of Albert Lea and Wendelyn Friehl-Taylor of Albert Lea.
In order to be named to the dean’s list a student must carry at least 14 academic credits and maintain at least a 3.5 grade point average.
Knudtson receives scholarship
Skyla Knudtson of Ellendale was one of more than 50 students invited to attend the Merit Scholarship brunch held at the University of Minnesota in Crookston. Knudtson, an animal science major, received the distinguished scholarship.
