“Don’t do anything you wouldn’t want your grandmother to know about” is Elena Schewe’s life motto.

Schewe is one of the interns at the Albert Lea Tribune this summer. If she’s not busy conjuring up a new topic to write about, you’ll find her on the basketball court telling her teammates at Alden-Conger School how to block a shot or go up for a rebound.

Not only is Schewe the basketball team captain, she also manages the Alden-Conger girls volleyball team, is a proud Knights softball player and is on the clay target team.

“I really suck at it but it’s a blast,” Schewe said.

She’s the baby of the family, who could see herself following in her 20-year-old sister Alicia’s footsteps in going to the University of Minnesota Morris with a possible major in English. After she receives her bachelor’s degree, hopefully in English, she wants to be an editor of a newspaper one day.

“I took this internship to see if being a writer was actually my thing or not,” Schewe said.

Sports aren’t the only activity going on in this busy 16-year-old’s life. She is a member of her school’s many clubs such as Youth Advisory Council, Student Council, National Honor Society, which she is the treasurer and secretary, and band and choir.

“I’m lucky to be home by 7 every night,” Schewe said.

When she does have free time, however, you’ll find her curled up with a good book such as “Tisha” by Robert Specht or on a hike around Lake Winnibigoshish.

She may have a hectic life, but Schewe still finds time to enjoy life and hang out with her friends and family.
