BISMARCK, N.D. — A Killdeer, North Dakota, teenager is accused of texting while driving in a crash that killed a Minnesota man and injured another in February.
According to a press release, 18 year-old Ashley Birkle was charged Thursday with negligent homicide and possession of alcohol as a minor.
The crash occurred on Feb. 2 on Interstate 94 near Jamestown.
The Highway Patrol said Birkle’s vehicle crossed the highway median and struck a pickup, killing 61-year-old David Herold of Garfield and injuring Matthew Schroeder of Dalton.
Birkle told authorities that she had fallen asleep. Investigators said her telephone revealed text messages that she allegedly sent while on the road.
It’s unclear if Birkle has an attorney. She is slated to appear in court on July 1.
