Weekend Planner: Eddie Cochran Weekend to draw in car enthusiasts

This weekend is the 29th annual Eddie Cochran Weekend presented by the Freeborn County Historical Society. There are events starting at 6 p.m. Friday and all day Saturday.

At 6 p.m. Friday there will be a cruise-in social at Green Mill on East Main in Albert Lea. The museum will have root beer floats available.

Saturday is the annual car show from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration is from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Cost is $10 per car and includes a dash plaque and goodie bag. The event is free to spectators. There will be music by Megaforce and a sound and light show at the event, along with outside food and other downtown food and drink establishments within walking distance.

Awards will be given out at 2 p.m. The top 25 car show awards, which are picked by the car show entrants, will be awarded along with Mayor’s Choice Award, FCHM Award, Albert Lea Convention and Visitors Bureau Award, Riverland Auto Tech Choice Award and the top five cars chosen by spectators.

The Eddie Cochran and Marion Ross exhibits will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the museum, along with the downtown Albert Lea window decorating contest, which is a ’50s theme, with an award given to first place from the museum.

To close out the event, a 12-mile car cruise will start at 4 p.m. on North Broadway in downtown Albert Lea.

Richie Lee and the Fabulous ’50s will also have two shows. The first one is at 2:30 p.m. and the second one is at 7 p.m. He will perform hits from the ’50s and ’60s. You can purchase tickets at the Albert Lea Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Friday

• A salad luncheon will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at First Lutheran Church’s Bethany Hall. Cost is $7. Proceeds will benefit the stained glass window fund.

• A cancer survivorship walk will be at 3 p.m at the Mayo Clinic Health System at HealthReach walking track. There is no cost and is available for cancer patients currently receiving treatments, after cancer treatments and caregivers.

• A burger feed will be from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Alden American Legion. Cost is $5 for a burger or pork burger with all the fixings and chips.

• Glenville Days kicks off with a scholarship supper at 5 p.m. through the Glenville Fire Department. Various events will take place throughout the weekend. See a story about the activities in the festival on Page 3.

• The Pelican Breeze II pizza cruise will start at 6 p.m. at Frank Hall Park. Ten reservations are needed for the Breeze to go. Call 507-383-7273 by 4 p.m. to reserve spots. The cost is $20.

 

Saturday

• The Unique Junque Sale will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1206 Richway Drive in Albert Lea. Bring items ready to sell on June 11 and 12. If you would like to help set up or work the day of the sale, call Bev Jackson Cotter at 507-373-4748.

• The Albert Lea Farmers Market will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the Northbridge Mall, 2510 Bridge Ave. Asparagus, plants, green onions, lettuce, strawberries and many more things will be sold.

• The On a Summer Day gallery exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Albert Lea Art Center.

• The Geneva Cancer Run will leave from Geneva Bar & Grill shortly after 11 a.m. The ride goes for about 120 miles, stopping for lunch in Douglas and returning back to Geneva at about 4:30 or 5 p.m.

• The UV Splash Dash, sponsored by the Rotary Club, will start at 10 p.m. at the North Broadway parking lot. Cost is $40 with registration starting at 8 p.m. Proceeds will benefit Halverson Elementary’s healthy snack cart program.

 

Sunday

• The On a Summer Day gallery exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Albert Lea Art Center.

• The Cloverleaf and Lakeview Lions Annual Flight Breakfast will be from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It is at the Albert Lea Airport. Cost is free for pilots in command. Adults are $7 and children 12 and under are $4.

• Enjoy a Sunday breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Albert Lea American Legion. Cost is $7. There will be pancakes, sausages, potatoes and more.

• A rock ’n’ roll church service will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church.

• The Pelican Breeze II cruise will be from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Frank Hall Park. The cost is $10 per person. Be at the park by 1:15 p.m.
