Area youth will have a chance to take to the skies with the Young Eagles Flight Rally.

Free airplane rides will be given for children ages 8 to 17 beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Albert Lea Airport. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

The Experimental Aircraft Association Vintage Chapter No. 13 will host the rally, which is part of the EAA Young Eagles Program. The Young Eagles Program was formed in 1992 to create interest about aviation with children.

The flight rally will also have pilots teaching children how airplanes work and what they do to fly safely.

After the flight, each child will receive a certificate making them an official Young Eagle and will be entered into the World’s Largest Logbook, which is on display at the EAA Air Adventure Museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Besides flight rallies, EAA members also fly Young Eagles on an individual basis. These flights are flown by pilots who volunteer their time, so there is no cost to the Young Eagles.

Registration will end at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The rain date for the flight rally is Sunday.

EAA pilots have flown over 1.9 million children since 1992. The local chapter has flown over 1,200 Young Eagles.
