Civil War talks starting again

Thursday marks the resumption of the Civil War Roundtable sessions in the early evening in Southwest Middle School’s media center at 7 p.m. John Haymond, executive director of the Mower County Historical Center, will present as his unique topic, “A Legal Study Of the Articles Of War Regarding the Dakota Conflict.” Discussions will follow his presentation.
The Dakota “War” is a topic familiar to most folks in this immediate region, with the Dakota Sioux’s rising in 1862 that resulted in Abe Lincoln’s review of so many native people scheduled to be hung in Mankato that he very greatly reduced by commuting the sentences of scores of native people to, nevertheless, leave over 30 natives to so sadly be hung together in Mankato, something unprecedented in U.S. history. This tragic outcome of the “rising” had clear and apparent ramifications for all native people within the borders of especially the U. S. and even Canada as well.
This event is free to all. Subsequent roundtable presentations and discussions will be held monthly every first Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. in Southwest Middle School’s media center They are likewise all free and open to everyone.
