With different categories of hunting season now officially underway across various parts of the state, we thought we would offer a few safety tips to those people interested in getting started.
According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, drowning, hypothermia, getting lost, falls from tree stands or just spraining an ankle are among the perils awaiting hunters who are ill prepared.
Because hunting involves guns, knives and arrows, hunters should take particular care to prepare before heading out for a day in the woods or wetlands.
The DNR states all hunters should consider taking an advanced hunter education class. In the meantime, here are six suggestions for a safe and successful hunting experience:
• Get a detailed map of the area you are hunting. Review it before you leave and carry it in the field.
• Carry a compass and know how to use it. Decide ahead of time the direction to head for if you get lost or disoriented.
• Carry a simple survival kit and be prepared for an unexpected overnight stay in the field. The survival kit should contain a rope, a knife, water, waterproof matches, an emergency shelter and first aid supplies.
• Make sure to wear a life vest on water.
• Know your hunting partners’ physical and emotional limitations. Don’t push your partner or yourself beyond your limits.
• Use a fall restraint device when hunting from an elevated stand.
• Always let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return.
