Compiling 286 yards of total offense wasn’t enough to lift the Tigers past the Hubmen.

The Albert Lea football team was bested by Jordan 35-14 Friday at Jim Gustafson Field. The loss brings the Tigers’ record to 0-4.

“For the second straight week I thought we were the better football team,” said Tigers coach Kevin Armbrust. “We just didn’t play like it.”

Senior Jake Kilby led Albert Lea in rushing, with 127 total yards on 21 carries. Kilby also had 107 passing yards and two touchdowns.

“Jake Kilby had a great game, rushing and throwing,” said Armbrust. “He was great offensively.”

The Tigers as a whole rushed for 179 yards on 38 carries.

Armbrust said that sophomore Alex Goodmanson stepped up in Friday’s game. Goodmanson racked up 50 yards and a touchdown on five receptions.

“Offensively we started clicking,” said Armbrust. “We moved the ball, we just didn’t finish.”

He also noted that Friday’s game was the first time the offensive line didn’t give up a sack this season.

Sophomore Jesse Hernandez had 18 yards on three receptions and rushed for 32 yards on two carries. Senior Parker Boyum rushed for 18 yards on 13 carries.

“He ran hard and he’s getting better every week,” Armbrust said of Boyum. “I’m excited to see him grow and take the next steps now.”

Junior Tristan Johnston led Albert Lea defensively with 12 tackles and three assists.

“Defensively we did pretty well most of the night, but we dug ourselves a hole and just couldn’t get out,” said Armbrust. “We gave them two scores. … If we take those two away we just lost by one score.”

The hole Armbrust referred to was the two touchdowns Jordan scored in the first quarter.

Albert Lea didn’t score until late in the second quarter and trailed Jordan 21-7 at halftime. The Tigers and the Hubmen each found the end zone in the third quarter, but the Hubmen tacked on another touchdown in the fourth to cement the lead.

“We turned it up and took a big step tonight offensively,” Armbrust said. “We’ve got to carry that into next week and minimize the mistakes.”

Next, Albert Lea (0-4, 0-4 South Central Red) will play Tri-City United (4-0, 3-0 South Central Red) at 7 p.m. Friday in Montgomery. The Titans are coming off a 53-0 win Friday at Worthington.
