Joy Sanders, 1924-2015

Funeral services for Joy Elaine Sanders of Albert Lea will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. The Rev. John Holt will officiate. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery. Friends may visit one hour before the service at the church.

Joy died Sunday, Aug. 30, 2015, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea.

Joy was born March 9,  1924, in Albert Lea, the daughter of George and Margit (Sanders) Ruble, and was raised by her grandparents Martin and Josephine Sanders.

She graduated from Albert Lea High School with the class of 1946, and then obtained her associate’s degree from Waldorf College.

She was a faithful member of First Lutheran Church, where she was active in Mission Circle 27, the Friendship Club, the FLCW and served on the altar guild for over 20 years. As a resident of Broadway Care Center for the past several years,  Joy continued to enjoy the monthly visits and communion from friends at First Lutheran Church.

Joy did clerical work at Ford Garage for a short time, and then had served as church secretary at Methodist Church for a time.

She was a member of the Friendly Handicap Club and enjoyed senior citizen activities — especially bingo. She also enjoyed playing dominoes and reading the Albert Lea Tribune every day.

Joy attended Camp Courage Summer Camp for many years.

She is survived by cousins Steve Bjerke, Kathi Sobota and Cindy Allen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her grandparents, and cousins Margaret Allen and Marjorie Bjerke.
