WELLS — Kathy Krebsbach, payroll tax compliance specialist for Alliance Benefit Group NCS of Albert Lea, will teach students at United South Central Public School about taxes and how they affect their paychecks on Sept. 30.

“We aim to take the shock out of the tax withholding system for teens new to the workforce,” Krebsbach said. “The better teens understand their paycheck and the tax withholding system, the better they will handle their own finances.”

The teaching effort is part of a nationwide push to improve financial literacy among teenagers. Payroll professionals will teach Paycheck 101 to local high school students at schools across the United States during Money Matters National Education Day.

“We want to provide real-world financial literacy to America’s next generation,” said Dan Maddux, executive director of the American Payroll Association. “Local APA chapters across the country are arming students with the knowledge and understanding to improve their money management skills, save for the future and put more money in their pocket with each paycheck.”

The American Payroll Association teamed with the National Council on Economic Education to create an easy-to-use lesson plan, structured for students who are new to the workforce. The lesson explains the elements of a paycheck, the amount of taxes they can expect to be withheld and how those taxes are calculated.

According to a press release, the presentation fits into the United South Central Public Schools Preparing Students for Successful Transition initiative.
