Trailing by two goals after one period, the Waldorf hockey team ramped up its offense the rest of the way en route to a 4-2 win over Michigan Tech Saturday in a Northern Collegiate Hockey League matchup at Albert Lea City Arena, according to a press release.

“Our effort and intensity picked up in the last two periods after a slow start,” Waldorf coach Brett Shelanski said. “It was good to see us come back like that after finding ourselves down quickly at the start.”

Michigan Tech’s Dylan Etelamaki scored unassisted in the first minute of the contest. T.J. Lyle pushed the Wolf Pack (0-4, 0-4 NCHL) to a two-goal advantage less than three minutes later following assists from Bryan Reitter and Stephen Comperchio.

The Warriors (4-2, 2-0 NCHL) got on the scoreboard in fourth minute of the second period as sophomore Jeffrey Bartel knocked in a goal off an assist from sophomore Drew Soderberg.

Sophomore Buddy Napier connected on the equalizer with less than three minutes remaining in the second period. Bartel contributed the assist to register his second point of the game.

Senior Reed Loucks notched the game-winning goal, converting on a power play six minutes into the final period. Senior Christian Weber and sophomore Matthew Liggett provided assists.

Freshman Robert Danyo helped Waldorf add further separation, scoring in the ninth minute of the third period. Assists came from freshman Rodney Engstrom and junior Artem Savelyev.

The Warriors outshot Michigan Tech, 75-22 while completing the series sweep.

Ronald Paulson picked up the win in goal for Waldorf. The sophomore stopped every shot he faced, finishing with 12 saves.

Sophomore Bruno Novotny also recorded eight saves for the Warriors.

A come-from-behind win presented Waldorf with a challenge, which is what the Warriors know what they can expect each and every night in the NCHL.

“Winning games in this league takes a full 60-minute effort and it was good that we could maybe learn that lesson while still finding a way to win,” Shelanski said.

Waldorf faces Midland University in next weekend’s series at Fremont, Neb. Game times are 8:30 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday. The series marks the final two showdowns between the teams. Midland took the first two contests from Waldorf, winning by scores of 4-2 and 3-0 on Sept. 18-19 at Albert Lea.
