Local student wins top honors at national meet
Abby Leach of Albert Lea recently won the Most Outstanding Law Student in the Nation Award.
Leach was nominated by Kyle Jensen, current dean of the USD Law Delta Theta Phi organization, and Katie Jorgensen, the immediate past dean who jointly stated, “We chose Abby because of her commitments to academics while being involved with various organizations.”
Rohde graduates from Allen College
Sarah Rohde of Albert Lea received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing with magna cum laude honors from Allen College. The college awarded 76 degrees at its commencement ceremony Aug. 14 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
The speaker for Allen College’s summer commencement was Sarah Brown. Brown is the vice president of operations of UnityPoint Clinic. Brown began her nursing career as a staff nurse in Allen Hospital’s intensive care unit. Since then she has held a number of other leadership positions at Allen, including director of population health and continuum strategy, program director of inpatient rehabilitation and house supervisor. Brown has also served as an adjunct instructor at Allen College.
Rohde earned a Master of Science in nursing, majoring in nursing leadership and administration; and a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Allen College. She is currently enrolled in a doctoral program in health administration at Capella University.
Allen College offers degrees in radiography, health sciences and nursing. Just over 600 students enrolled at the college this fall. Information on Allen College is available at www.allencollege.edu.
Knudtson volunteers during service event
As a part of new student orientation at the University of Minnesota, Crookston, students are introduced to Crookston through a program called “Meet Crookston through Service” before classes even start.
On Aug. 22 students were at work at 14 different locations around the community under the direction of their student orientation leader and Lisa Loegering, assistant director of community engagement at the Crookston campus. Skyla Knudtson of Ellendale spent the morning at North Country Food Bank volunteering as part of the unique service opportunity.
A.L. students enroll at Ridgewater
Ridgewater College is pleased to announce that Banypiny Chan and Emily Goskeson, both of Albert Lea, have enrolled for the fall 2015 semester. Chan is majoring in liberal arts and sciences. Goskeson is majoring as an activity director.
Ridgewater College is a community and technical college, educating over 6,000 individuals each year on its campuses in Willmar and Hutchinson.
Jahnke chosen as ambassador
Alexandria Jahnke of Albert Lea, a senior studying elementary education at Iowa State University, has been chosen to serve as a student ambassador for the College of Human Sciences.
Serving as a human sciences recruitment ambassador is an exciting volunteer opportunity within the College of Human Sciences. The ambassadors share their personal experiences to present a positive, realistic student view of the College of Human Sciences to prospective students and their families during recruitment events.
Thorson inducted into honor society
Makenzie Thorson of Lake Mills is one of 72 Wartburg College students who was inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma honor society Oct. 10.
Phi Eta Sigma is the oldest and largest freshman honor society. A student must achieve a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 and be in the top 20 percent of their class by the end of the first year.
Wartburg College’s Phi Eta Sigma members have the opportunity to win additional scholarships through the honor society, as well as participate in a variety of social and service events on campus.
Woitas graduates from Crown College
Aaron Woitas graduated from Crown College in St. Bonifacius following the spring 2015 semester. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communications with a concentration in advertising and graphic design. Woitas also attended Los Angeles Film Studies Center in Los Angeles through Best Semester — a program of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.
