Glenville-Emmons ends open enrollment with district in Northwood

The Glenville-Emmons School Board voted unanimously last month to dissolve the district’s open enrollment agreement with the Northwood-Kensett Community School District.
The decision means that as of July 1, 2016, no new students from either school district will be allowed to open enroll with each other.
Glenville-Emmons Superintendent Jerry Reshetar cited a breach in the district’s open enrollment policy. He said the Glenville-Emmons School Board denied open enrollment to five students wanting to attend the Northwood-Kensett School District this year, but Northwood-Kensett allowed the five students to attend the school anyway tuition-free.
“This action comprised our open enrollment agreement and effectively ended the established protocols,” Reshetar said in an email to the Tribune.
The agreement was put into place in 2004.
“Over the past few years, too many families were requesting starting,” Reshetar said.
He said students who are currently open-enrolled will remain so until they either graduate or move to another district.
“There is always a possibility,” Reshetar said of the possibility the district will reinstate open enrollment. “However, guidelines established in the agreement must be followed.”
He said Northwood-Kensett has been advised of the possibility for the past year.
Glenville-Emmons also has an open enrollment agreement with Lake Mills Community School that Reshetar said is currently under review.
Northwood-Kensett Superintendent Michael Crozier said the school is happy Glenville-Emmons is allowing current open enrollees to remain and declined to comment further.
