Freeborn County Sheriff Kurt Freitag will get paid 10 percent more in 2016 than he did in 2015.
The Freeborn County Board of Commissioners unanimously set Freitag’s salary at $82,500 Tuesday at the Freeborn County Board of Commissioners meeting.
Commissioners cited a number of factors in their decision.
“I think he’s been doing an excellent job understanding the budget and made a lot of the right moves,” Commissioner Glen Mathiason said. “It sounds like the attitude in the department is pretty good.”
Freitag’s 2015 salary is $75,000.
Mathiason said the jump puts his salary more in line with other sheriff’s salaries in the state.
Freeborn County Commissioner Mike Lee cited Freitag’s efforts to hold community events as a contributing factor in the decision.
“I think he’s been doing a really good job,” Lee said. “I think he deserves it.”
Freitag was unable to be reached as of press time.
Other 2016 set salaries were the following:
$104,000 for County Attorney Craig Nelson, an approximate 2 percent increase from his $102,000 2015 salary.
$65,700 for County Recorder Kelly Callahan, an approximate 4 percent increase from his 2015 salary of $63,200.
$71,000 for Auditor-treasurer Pat Martinson, an approximatel 4.1 percent increase from her 2015 salary of $68,200.
$22,674 for the commissioners. This is the same as 2015.
Commissioners by statute have to set the salaries.
