Weekend Planner: Wine, beer tasting for United Way this weekend

A holiday beer and wine tasting to benefit the United Way of Freeborn County will be on Friday at Wedgewood Cove Golf Club.

Sponsored by Fountain Warehouse Liquor, the event begins at 6:30 p.m.

Cost is $20 and includes hors d’oeuvres, local artists and many wines and beers.

All of the proceeds benefit the United Way.

The following is a roundup of other events taking place this weekend:

 

Friday

• The Albert Lea Parks and Recreation Department will host Fabulous Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for children in grades kindergarten through fifth grade at Albert Lea City Arena. Enjoy a day of ice skating, movies, games and crafts. Pizza and pop will be provided for lunch. Fee is $10.

The Home-Based Business Show will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Northbridge Mall, 2510 Bridge Ave.

Our Savior’s Lutheran Church will host a fall bazaar from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, 320 W. College St. Cost is $7.

Meal includes vegetable beef soup, sloppy joe, pie and coffee. There will be a raffle drawing. Tickets are $5 for one or three for $10. Full-size and baby quilts will also be for sale.

Hollandale Christian School will host its fall supper fundraiser from 4 to 7 p.m. Look for full details on the event in another story in today’s paper.

Alden-Conger School will present “Jolly Roger and the Pirate Queen” at 7 p.m. at the school.

 

Saturday

The Lloyd and Ardis Peterson Cancer Education Symposium will be at 8 a.m. at Wedgewood Cove Golf Club. Learn about the latest in treatment, research and surviving cancer. The symposium is free, and brunch will be provided. To register or learn more call 507-668-2046.

Ascension Lutheran Church, 1101 U.S. Highway 69 S., will host a time and talent bazaar from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church. Morning coffee will run from 8 to 10 a.m., with lunch served from 10:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Proceeds from donations will benefit the following: Ascension Youth Campership Fund, Good Earth Village, Christ Thru Helping Hands, Lutheran Social Services Homeless in Minnesota, Campus Ministry at Mankato State, Salvation Army Food Shelf and SEMCAC homeless shelter.

The Albert Lea Farmers Market will be from 9 a.m. to noon at Northbridge Mall.

Moscow Lutheran Church will host a hunter’s lunch and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Moscow Town Hall. Hot coffee and doughnuts will be served, along with hearty chili and sandwiches.

Ruby’s Pantry will be from 10 a.m. to noon at Assembly of God Church, 1540 S. Shore Drive.

Alden Municipal Hall will host the Alden Lions Accessory Extravaganza from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Home-Based Business Show will continue from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Northbridge Mall, 2510 Bridge Ave.

A holiday bazaar benefiting the Albert Lea United Methodist youth mission trip will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church, 702 U.S. Highway 69 S. There will be vendors, crafters, a bake sale and a holiday cafe.

Glenville Women of Today will host a fundraiser lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Glenville American Legion. Menu includes sloppy joes, hot dogs, beans, potato salad, chips, bars and water. Donations are accepted.

The Story Show, featuring presentations from local writers, will begin at 7 p.m. at The Lighthouse Theatre & Event Center. Tickets are $10 for teenagers and adults. Children age 12 and under are free.

Alden-Conger School will present “Jolly Roger and the Pirate Queen” at 7 p.m. at the school.

A Johnny Cash tribute by Bill Dewey will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center.

 

Sunday

The Albert Lea American Legion will host a breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Menu includes pancakes, sausages, diced potatoes, scrambled eggs, fruit cup, juice, milk and coffee. Cost is $7.

Good Samaritan Society in Albert Lea will host a Denny Brue’s pancake breakfast and fall pie sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Menu includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, milk, juice and coffee. Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children 5 and under. Proceeds go to support the care center’s remodeling.

The Home-Based Business show will continue from noon to 5 p.m. at Northbridge Mall.

Alden-Conger School will present “Jolly Roger and the Pirate Queen” at 2 p.m. at the school.

The Southeastern Minnesota Chamber Orchestra will kick off its 2015-16 season with a pops concert at 3 p.m. in the Albert Lea High School auditorium.

Orchestra members come from throughout southeastern Minnesota and northern Iowa, ranging in age from high school students to seasoned musicians. The orchestra is under the direction of Brock A. Besse.

Tickets are available at the Albert Lea Convention and Visitors Bureau and from members of the orchestra. Cost is $10 for adults and $8 for seniors. Children in kindergarten through 12th grade are free. Tickets are available at the door but are an additional $2.
