The Lake Mills wrestling team opened the season Tuesday with a three-match sweep during a quad at Clear Lake, according to a press release.

The Bulldogs beat Belmond-Klemme 45-27, St. Ansgar 54-18 and Clear Lake 46-24.

Lake Mills opened the night with a win over conference foe Belmond-Klemme. The Bulldogs bumped Slade Sifuentes — ranked No. 6 (1A) at 195 pounds — up to 220. He controlled the match against No. 5 (1A) Cameron Beminio and won by fall in 5:01.

“We knew Belmond-Klemme would be tough because they have a lot of good seniors on their squad,” said Lake Mills coach Alex Brandenburg. “The dual did not start very well, but a lineup change created a huge momentum shift which carried through the rest of the night.”

In the second dual of the night, the Bulldogs breezed past St. Ansgar 54-18 with six pins.

In the final dual of the night, Lake Mills and Clear Lake — two undefeated teams — squared off. Lake Mills got off to a fast start and never looked backed as they dominated the Lions, 46-24.

Lake Mills individuals who finished the night with perfect records were Alex Martinson, Spencer Jensen, Gabe Irons, Cole Bergo and Slade Sifuentes.

“I couldn’t be happier with the first night out because you never know what to expect,” noted Brandenburg. “We picked up three wins, and two of the duals were ones which could have be lost if we had wrestled poorly.”

Next, Lake Mills will take the mat at 6 p.m. today for a quad with Osage, Central Springs and Rockford at Rockford.
