Man charged with choking, assaulting woman

An Albert Lea man is facing prison time after allegedly choking a woman late last month.
Adam Ly Haas, 23, appeared in Freeborn County District Court with his lawyer for the first time on charges Wednesday afternoon.
Haas is charged with domestic assault by strangulation and domestic assault.
According to court documents, an officer with the Albert Lea Police Department was dispatched on Nov. 28 to a residence on Water Street regarding an alleged domestic assault.
A witness to the incident reportedly said she had seen Haas punch the alleged victim in the back of the head after getting angry at the alleged victim.
The alleged victim told police Haas punched her in the back of the head, pulled her hair and choked her.
An officer reportedly saw extensive bruising on the alleged victim’s right hand, bruising and a swollen finger on her left hand, a scratch above her right eye, a bite mark on her right arm, several red marks across her throat and bruising on her forearm and her forehead. The officer said he felt numerous lumps on her head where she said the defendant struck her.
According to court documents, Haas has been convicted of four harassment restraining order violations since 2013.
Domestic assault by strangulation carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a $5,000 fine. Domestic assault carries maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Haas’ next court hearing is scheduled for Jan. 8.
