Multiple street projects slated this summer

Several major street construction projects are slated for this summer in Albert Lea.
Albert Lea City Engineer Steven Jahnke said all of the streets where work will be completed are in poor condition or a top priority for the city.
The projects are the following:
• Reconstruction of Edgewater Drive from Lakeview Boulevard through Edgewater Park. The project is expected to cost $519,689.
• Reconstruction of Lake Chapeau Drive from Freeborn County Road 46 to just past City Arena. The project is expected to cost $405,855 and is expected to be paid for with assessments and city funds.
• Reconstruction of Park Avenue, Grace Street, Mariners Lane, Harriet Lane, Lake Avenue and East College Street. The estimated cost for these streets was unavailable.
A neighborhood improvement project is planned that involves a bituminous overlay, along with various curb, gutter and sidewalk replacement on the following:
• James Avenue from Second Street to Frank Avenue
• Third Street from Newton Avenue to Frank Hall Drive
• Newton Avenue from Fourth Street to Seventh Street
• Sixth Street from James
• Avenue to Frank Hall Drive
• Second Street from Broadway Avenue to Frank Hall Drive
• Fourth Street from Frank Avenue to Frank Hall Drive
• Frank Hall Drive from Fifth Street to Seventh Street
• St. John Avenue from Fourth Street to Seventh Street
Curb and gutter replacement are planned for Third Street, Fourth Street, Sixth Street and St. John Avenue.
The project is expected to cost $1.32 million.
Assessments for the projects are planned to be over 10 years, with interest rates decided by 2016 bonding.
Public hearings are planned for Feb. 22, pending approval of feasibility reports at the Monday Albert Lea City Council meeting.
Jahnke said he expects traffic to be affected when work is underway.
