The Albert Lea Police Department is advising preparedness in dealing with the extreme cold weather expected this weekend.

“Make sure you bring warm clothes with, in case the car breaks down,” said Albert Lea Lt. Darren Hanson.

The daytime high Saturday is expected to be 5 degrees with a northwest wind of 15 to 25 mph, according to The Weather Channel. It is expected to dip to 11 below zero Saturday night with a northwest wind of 10 to 20 mph. The high temperature Sunday is only expected to be 1 degree with west to northwest wind of 10 to 15 mph. The low Sunday night is expected to be 1 below zero.

Hanson said it’s good to let your vehicle start a few minutes early.

Hanson advised making sure maintenance is up to date and said cold weather can bring out lingering issues.

He advised bringing a winter survival kit that includes a thermal blanket and high-energy foods, such as a granola bar.

A number of cars were stuck on Albert Lea roads during last month’s snowstorm. Hanson advised leaving your vehicle and seeking help, if safe. If you become stuck on a busy road, Hanson advised calling a tow truck.

He advised against unnecessary travel in extreme cold.

“If you can stay home, stay home,” Hanson said.

According to the United States Department of Labor, an emergency kit should include a cellphone or two-way radio, a windshield ice scraper, snow brush, flashlight with extra batteries, shovel, tow chain, traction aids, emergency flares, jumper cables, snacks, water, road maps, a blanket and a change of clothes.
