MINNEAPOLIS — Gov. Mark Dayton is condemning vandalism to a south Minneapolis mosque as “un-Minnesotan.”
Dayton met with about two dozen Muslim community leaders and imams on Sunday morning at the Umatul Islam Center. A burglar was caught on surveillance cameras Wednesday using a hammer to break windows in the center’s offices and school.
According to a press release, Dayton said he was “deeply offended” by the damage and called the vandalism “so un-American and so un-Minnesotan.” The governor called the act an “assault against the right of everybody in Minnesota to practice their faith as they choose.”
The Islamic center includes the mosque, offices, a weekend school for children and outreach services. Some computer equipment was stolen in the break-in.
Police are investigating and have stepped up patrols in the area.
