A Wisconsin man was charged Wednesday in Freeborn County District Court with fleeing police in a motor vehicle during a chase Tuesday in Albert Lea.
Joshua Wade Shawley, 25, of Melrose, Wisconsin, was arrested at the intersection of Minnesota Highway 13 and U.S. Highway 69.
According to court documents, a deputy activated his emergency lights and attempted to pull Shawley over for a burnt-out taillight shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Main Street and William Street. Shawley reportedly didn’t pull over, and the deputy then activated his siren as the two neared the intersection of Main Street and Newton Avenue.
Shawley reportedly stopped at a red light on Newton Avenue then continued through the intersection, driving west on Main Street at approximately 30 mph.
As the pursuit involving the Albert Lea Police Department and Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office continued, Shawley reportedly continued west and drove over stop sticks that had been deployed at the intersection of West Main Street and First Avenue.
According to court documents, he reportedly finally stopped in the middle of U.S. Highway 69, approximately 50 feet south of the intersection with Minnesota Highway 13.
Shawley reportedly didn’t respond to officer commands to roll down his window or show his hands. Officers reportedly physically removed him from the driver’s seat, handcuffing him to the ground.
Shawley was transported to the hospital for evaluation because his behavior was erratic and unpredictable, and he appeared to be hallucinating, according to court documents. His blood was reportedly drawn by hospital staff.
Shawley reportedly had excited verbal outbursts, talked to himself and stared into the distance while being interviewed by a sergeant. A suspected controlled substance was reportedly seized from the center console of Shawley’s car.
When the sergeant asked Shawley what was in the bag, he reportedly said, “Everyone is welcome to some.”
Freeborn County District Court Judge Ross Leuning set conditional bail at $15,000.
Shawley’s next appearance is scheduled for Feb. 11.
If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of three years and one day in prison and a $5,000 fine.
