The Nice Advice, By Leah Albert
Dear Leah,
Lately it seems there is a lot of controversy and change regarding the food products we buy at the grocery store and prepare for our families. Every day brings a new recall and more public outcry for transparency of our food sources. I’ve even read about a company in the USA that ships its chicken to China for processing, and then ships it back to be sold in our local markets! I’m concerned. I want to make sure the food I am feeding my family is safe and nutritious.
Unfortunately, I have the typical chicken nugget and macaroni kids. They are not very adventurous in their food choices. We are a busy family, typically getting home from work and school right at the dinner hour. There isn’t much time for meal preparation. How can I begin to move my family toward better and healthier food?
Signed, Mealtime Meltdown
Dear Meltdown,
There are many benefits to healthier eating! Kudos to you for taking the initiative to change. And yes, you’re right. In this day and age, when we have global information at our fingertips, we are definitely becoming a more informed and vocal society. I have fears about our food sources as well. Many do.
One tip I learned years ago, when I made my own choice to move away from processed foods began at the grocery store. Only shop the outside of the store. Meaning, avoid going up and down the aisles. When you only shop the outside of the store, you will only be shopping three or four departments: produce, meats, dairy and bakery. Of course, you will need to peruse the aisles for your cooking staples like flour and oils, but there are ways to manage that as well.
Always have a list. If you’re like me, some weeks are better than others when it comes to time and organization. You may not be able to plan every meal ahead of time, but you should always have a list. And stick to it! This will keep you from spending too much time wandering through the aisles, and may also save you some money.
We are very fortunate to live in an area that has excellent opportunity for locally grown fruits, veggies and meat. As you evolve into your healthier choices and research, I encourage you to visit our community’s farmers market. Talk to the growers. Find out what they do and how they raise their crops. They are a tremendous resource. Also, eating things like locally farmed honey can reduce or eliminate seasonal allergies. You’ll learn so much. I’m excited for you.
Get the kids involved in the meal planning. And, if you’re more patient than me, get them involved in the preparation. When kids are given the opportunity to contribute, they take ownership of the meal and are more likely to eat it!
My family is also on the go during the school week. But the weekend is a great time to try all of those cute Pinterest food projects — you know, the stuffed strawberries and veggies with wiggly eyes. Having fun with your healthier eating will make everyone enjoy it that much more. Take care!
