Action tabled on mining project

The Freeborn County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday tabled action on a conditional use permit for an excavation project near Twin Lakes.
The permit would allow Holtmeier Construction, a Mankato-based construction company, to mine sand and gravel for road and construction purposes on property approximately a mile northwest of Twin Lakes.
The board plans to vote on the permit April 19.
The delay was made so Holtmeier Construction could work out details of its plan with neighboring stakeholders.
Freeborn County planning and zoning coordinator Wayne Sorensen said the process has been ongoing since December with some delays.
Beth Peterson, who lives on land adjacent to the proposed site, said she opposed the permit because it would be dangerous and negatively affect her property value.
She said it would disrupt the activities of neighboring Concordia Bear Lake Lutheran Church.
She said the conditional use permit did not address her concerns, and noted she has compiled a list of about 120 people who share similar thoughts.
Peterson’s older brother, Virgil Schewe, is the owner of the land that would be used for the project.
Mining manager Chuck Stoffel said the conditional use permit would provide maintenance gravel for townships.
He said the company plans to work with the church to prevent mining during funerals. Mining would not take place on Sundays.
Freeborn County Engineer Sue Miller said she is concerned 154th Street, which would be used to haul the sand and gravel, would not be sturdy enough to hold the increased traffic.
She recommended improving the road before the project is done.
