The Freeborn County administrator was placed on paid leave for two weeks last month, according to the Freeborn County attorney.

John Kluever was placed on temporary leave March 8 after the Freeborn County Board of Commissioners conducted a review of his performance in a closed meeting.

Freeborn County Attorney Craig Nelson said Kluever was placed on leave and provided with additional direction following the performance review.

Kluever was reinstated March 22.

He declined to comment on specifics of his performance in question, saying the matter was a personnel issue.

Kluever reportedly had scheduled vacation time during his leave.

Commissioners appointed Freeborn County Recorder Kelly Callahan as acting county administrator March 15.

Callahan conducted the March 15 meeting and served as active administrator and county recorder until March 22, when Kluever returned to work.

Nelson said Kluever is following recommendations commissioners made to him upon his return.

Kluever, 5th District Commissioner Mike Lee and 2nd District Commissioner Dan Belshan declined to comment.
