The Riverland Community College music department presents guest artist Gayle Heimer in a recital at noon Wednesday. The lunchtime event will take place at Riverland’s Austin east campus in the newly renovated music rehearsal room, E102.
Heimer will present an array of classical and jazz works for flute and piano. On the program are “In Ireland” by Hamilton Harty, “Wedding Day at Troldhaugen” by Edvard Grieg, “Morceau de Concours” by Gabriel Faure, and “Sentimentale” from the Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano by Claude Bolling. Riverland faculty member Scott Blankenbaker will accompany Heimer on piano.
Heimer serves as principal flute for the Austin Symphony Orchestra and has performed with other orchestras and in numerous other ensembles. She lives on a farm near St. Ansgar in rural Iowa and is retired from her position as the technical services librarian at the Austin Public Library. Heimer studies flute with Greg Milliren, associate principal flute with the Minnesota Orchestra.
Riverland’s Casual Classics Concerts series came into existence 15 years ago and has featured several internationally-known classical musicians, Broadway performers, as well as local and regional talents. These concerts are free and open to the public.
The Riverland music department is an active and vital presence in the college and its communities. The department offers a variety of courses, performance opportunities, and concerts. Some students involved in Riverland music ensembles intend to be music majors; however, participation is open to all students.
Riverland’s ensembles give regular performances throughout the state and region, and have appeared twice in Alice Tulley Hall (Lincoln Center), and twice in Carnegie Hall. More information about music at Riverland can be found at www.riverland.edu/music.
