Bonding bill battle adds to divides Legislature

ST. PAUL — There’s a partisan battle brewing in the Minnesota Legislature over a public works package.

Democratic lawmakers challenged Republicans Wednesday to release their list of construction projects. Democrats who control the Senate and Gov. Mark Dayton have planned to borrow more than $1 billion for wastewater treatment repairs, upkeep at public colleges and other initiatives.

It’s one piece of the legislative session’s remaining to-do list that also includes a tax bill and transportation funding package. And there are wide divides in every area.

GOP lawmakers said the bonding bill can wait until after they’ve wrapped up taxes and road and bridge repairs. House Speaker Kurt Daudt has said it will include $600 million.
