Bulldogs perform at state

It was quite the weekend for two Iowa high school teams at the Iowa high school state track and field meet at Drake University.

Lake Mills sent two relay teams to state,  with the boys team qualifying for the final in the shuttle hurdle relay.

The boys’ team comprised of Max Bergo, Charlie Dugger, Grant Fjelstad, and Grant Boehmer finished sixth in the preliminary race, meaning they would advance to the final because the top eight make it. They qualified with a time of 59.89.

On Saturday, the foursome took their running and hurdling to another level.

They improved their time by more than .5 seconds to finish fourth in the event with a time of 59.37, which was two seconds off the pace set by first-place Clarinda, which finished with a time of 57.16.

Lake Mills’ Lexi Groe qualified for the finals in the 100-meter hurdles, and put on a solid performance. She finished in sixth place with a time of 15.99. Aleenah Marcucci of Northeast won the event.

Friday was a great day for Northwood-Kensett’s Tom Yezek. He set the state record in the final of the discus throw with a distance of 197-05. The second closest competitor was Nathan Karsjens of AGWSR, who was more than 22 feet behind Yezek.

The all-time record was set in 1978 by Scott Crowell of Mason City with a distance of 207-08.
