According to the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office, requirements vary depending on the position.

Albert Lea City Council

There are three positions open on the Albert Lea City Council after 1st Ward Councilor John Schulte V and 5th Ward Councilor Larry Anderson last month announced they would not seek re-election. Third Ward Councilor George Marin announced he will run for school board.

People wishing to run for City Council should file with Deputy City Clerk Daphney Maras at Albert Lea City Hall.

City administration can be reached at 377-4330.

Freeborn County Board of Commissioners

On the Freeborn County Board of Commissioners, seats up for election are in districts 1, 3 and 5 — presently held by Glen Mathiason, Jim Nelson and Mike Lee, respectively.

People can sign up for these positions in the county auditor’s office in the Freeborn County Courthouse.

The county auditor’s office can be reached at 377-5121.

Albert Lea School Board

Three seats on the Albert Lea School Board will be up for election this fall. The seats are presently held by Julie Johnson, Bill Leland and Linda Laurie.

Because the district does not have a primary, the candidate filing period will be in August.

State offices

The District 27A House of Representatives and District 27 Senate seats are also up for election.

The seats are presently held by Rep. Peggy Bennett, R-Albert Lea, and Sen. Dan Sparks, DFL-Austin.

Gary Schindler, DFL-Albert Lea, announced in October he will seek the 27A seat against Bennett.

People filing for these offices may file with the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State or the county auditor in which the candidate resides.
