Canterbury opens season with a twist

Minnesota’s preeminent horse track is kicking off its new season with a bet of its own.
Canterbury Park in Shakopee is cutting back the money it keeps from each betting dollar, the Star Tribune reports. It’s called the “takeout” — money that provides the track’s purses, track expenses and profits.
Canterbury has cut takeout from 17 percent to 15 percent on win, place and show bets. And it has cut it from 23 percent to 18 percent on wagers such as exactas and trifectas — where players predict the first two or first three finishers.
Track officials say the move could cost as much as $300,000, but they hope to make up for that in horse players betting more money.
