The city of Albert Lea has contracted with Clarke Mosquito Service of Clearwater for mosquito control this season.
According to a press release, the city encourages any residents who may have questions to call service directly at (800) 942-2555 or visit its website at www.clarke.com.
Services are scheduled to begin next Thursday, beginning at dusk. Application will be by ground.
The summer spraying schedule, weather permitting, will be every Thursday in June and July with a final application on Aug. 11.
The product being used is Biomist 4+4. The spray is a Permethrin-based product which is extremely safe, yet very effective against mosquitoes and gnats. According to a press release, the product has quick knockdown, low odor and is non-corrosive.
The product is registered by the EPA and Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
Though the city feels it has selected the safest products for this use, they believe that precautions should be used with any pesticide.
In addition to the adult mosquito control program, there are several things homeowners can do to reduce the local mosquito population:
• Eliminate trash, tires, and containers which may hold water creating a breeding site for mosquitoes.
• Maintain rain gutters and downspouts. Make sure no water remains in them after a rain.
• Empty and clean bird baths weekly.
• Store pails, barrels, tubs, boats, wheelbarrows, etc. upside down.
• Keep shrubs, lawns, and weeds trimmed to eliminate harborage areas.
• Encourage your neighbors to maintain their properties properly.
The city of Albert Lea and Clarke Mosquito Service want to have a safe and effective mosquito control program this year. Trained personnel handling the equipment and insecticide are of utmost importance.
