Tigers take second in golf

50 years ago: 1966

• Albert Lea High School placed fourth in the Big Nine Conference track and field meet with 33 points to Mankato’s first place total of 72 points. Finishing in first place for the Tigers with a school record  was the 880-yard relay team of Craig Pedersen, Doyle Freemyer, Brad Rinsem and John Fredrickson. Terry Peterson of the Tigers also won the high jump.

• Lowell Syverson, a graduate of ALHS, won the Hertel Award at Wartburg College for Outstanding Senior Athlete. He was a four-time letter winner in basketball and track. Lowell held the school record in the triple jump.

• Freeborn High School advanced to the semi-final round in district baseball after defeating Glenville 5-4. Winning pitcher Bob Chicos also had two hits.

 

25 years ago: 1991

• Diane Chicos  of Alden-Conger-Freeborn shot a 96 for medalist honors in the 447-427 victory over NRHEG. The Knights won the Gopher Conference girls’ golf title.

• The Fynbo Welding team won the Women’s Albert Lea Upper “B” National Volleyball League title. Team members were Sue Roberts, Nancy Bellrichard, Jeanne Allard, Mitch Thomas, Sue Brown, Sally Gildner, Linda Distad, Julie Grahn and Julie Becker.

• Named to the All-Big Nine Conference Boys’ Golf Team from ALHS were Todd Intihar, Brian Rechtzigel and Phgik Schmidt.

 

10 years ago: 2006

• Austin High School won the girls’ Big Nine Conference golf title with a score of 345. ALHS came in second place with a score of 367.

Kelli Hanson shot an 84 for the Tigers for medalist honors. The other scores for ALHS were Ali Demmer (92), Kaeli Wayne (93) and Alli Arnold (98).

• Named to the All-Big Nine Conference Boys’ Track and Field team from ALHS was Ben Schreiber who placed third in the shot put and sixth in the discus. Kendra Olchefsice placed second in the discus for the Tigers.

• Jordan Reinl, Matt Midtgaard, Dan Bestul and Jake Weisert each had two hits to lead Northwood-Kensett to a 7-6 baseball win over North Iowa.
