The Wells Area Food Shelf Board of Directors has approved a new program aimed to feed area children this summer when school lunch programs aren’t available to them, according to a press release.
Beginning next Wednesday, any patron of the Wells Area Food Shelf with school- age children will receive their usual monthly allotment of food.
In addition, they will also receive a second set of vouchers for milk, bread and eggs that will be dated two weeks into the future. That means these families will be able to pick up those essentials at the grocery store twice each month during the summer.
Families with school-age kids will also receive additional peanut butter, canned tuna and canned chicken over and above their monthly food supply.
“We know that many area families depend on school lunch programs to help feed their kids,” food shelf board chairwoman Jean Steinhauer explained. “We’re hoping our new program might help these families during summer vacation. We’re committed to getting rid of hunger in this area and believe this is one step toward making that happen.”
People wishing to help fund the food shelf’s summer food for kids program may mail or hand deliver their donations to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at 291 First St. SW in Wells.
