Albert Lea Legion traveled to Winona on Sunday for a doubleheader in baseball.
Albert Lea got two great pitching performances from Blake Simon and Taylor Heavner, as it was able to take both games from Winona 4-3 and 2-0.
Simon got the ball in the first game and he was spectacular.
“This was probably the best I have seen him pitch all year, including school ball,” said Albert Lea coach Jay Enderson. “He was on his game and made good pitches.”
Simon had a no-hitter going through 6 2/3 innings. He had Winona down to its last strike, but it managed to keep the game alive with a a bloop single.
That was followed by three runs, and Jacob Bordewick had to come in to close the game.
Albert Lea got two runs each in the third and fifth inning.
Parker Mullenbach drove in two runs for Albert Lea.
Heavner received the ball in the second game in 90 degree heat.
But the heat didn’t seem to slow him down.
Like Simon, Heavner was also on his game. He allowed just one hit, coming in the sixth inning as he struck out nine batters for the complete game.
Ben Witham and Alex Bledsoe both drove in a run for Albert Lea, as it improved its Legion baseball record to 4-2 on the season.
Albert Lea will host Owatonna Tuesday at Hayek Field.
First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
