Albert Lea gets past Winona

It was one of the quickest games of the season for the Albert Lea Tigers when they played the Winona Winhawks on Saturday in Red Wing.

Tigers pitcher Jake Kilby pitched his best game of the season, and it took him only 70 pitches to do so.

“(Kilby) was outstanding for us,” said Tigers coach Joe Sczublewski. “He was hitting his spots, pitching for outs, and kept the defense engaged.”

The end result was a 1-0 victory for the Tigers, who will advance to play Red Wing today at 5 p.m. after being rained out Saturday afternoon.

Kilby pitched a complete game and allowed only two hits.

As they have all season, the Tigers played solid defense, and kept Kilby’s shutout intact when it looked like the Winhawks were going to push across a run.

A ball was scorched into the right-center gap, but Alex Bledsoe tracked it down and made a terrific throw to Jacob Bordewick, who then fired a strike to catcher Sam Moyer, who blocked the plate and applied the tag for the out.

Albert Lea shortstop Jake Thompson fields the ball for the final out in Saturday’s game against Winona in Red Wing. Thompson went 1-3 in the game at the plate.

“It’s something we practice all the time,” Sczublewski said. “The boys executed it perfectly.”

The only run of the game came in the third inning when Mason Hammer and Jake Thompson led off with singles.

Then, Ben Witham singled home Hammer with one out.
