A.L. Jaycees crush Trades and Labor

50 years ago: 1966
• In the playoffs between the American and National Divisions of the Albert Lea Slowpitch League, the Jaycees of the American Div. defeated Trades and Labor 15-7. Hugh Hall was the winning pitcher for the Jaycees, who advanced to the Minnesota state tournament.
• Larry Brandt pitched a two-hitter for the Albert Lea VFW baseball team in their 4-0 win over Lake City. Greg Sainsbury had two hits for Albert Lea.
25 years ago: 1991
• The Albert Lea Moose Lodge No. 1703 women’s softball team placed second in the national tournament and fifth overall. Eldon Picha was the manager and Bobby Hanson was the coach. Team members were Michelle Thurnau, Chris Miller, Rel Clemens, Kara Johnsrud, Janna Hellie, Jo Dagestad, Lisa Rippentrop, Jean Pestorious, Ann Schuman, Terry Lilak, Lynnel Anderson, Julie White, Dee Dee Barnes, Wendy Weisser, Diane Bute and Lori Rippentrop.

• Winners in the men’s division of the 2006 Green Lea Golf Club Tournament included the following: Championship Flight – Phil Schmidt, Presidential Flight – Lance Engebretson, First Flight – Bucky Rasmussen, Second Flight – Paul Linnes, third Flight – Jeff Bowman, Fourth Flight – Todd Enderson, Fifth Flight – Mike Billat, Sixth Flight – Mike Westney, Seventh Flight – Kenny Vanriper and Eighth Flight – Dave Elvebak. In the women’s division Jill Westney won the championship flight and Betty Ellertson the first flight.
• The Glenville-Emmons American Legion baseball team started play in sub-district with a season record of 3-14. It won its first sub-district game 4-2 over Adams with Justin Flattum pitching a complete game. In the second round game G-E won 17-7 over New Richland. Devin Kaasa had four hits and Nathan Cooper had three hits and drove in four runs for G-E. In the sub-district title game G-E defeated the top seed Dodge County 6-2 with Michael Griebrok picking up the win. G-E lost its first game in Division 2 First District playoffs to LaCrescent 9-8.
