A.L. girls’ tennis takes down Winona

50 years ago: 1966

• The Albert Lea Jaycees were the leading slow pitch team and advanced to the Minnesota State Tournament. Team members were Jerry Crook, Vic Nelson, Gary Koeder, Bob Carlson, John Polis, Dick Kogel, Hugh Hall, Larry Johnson, Gordy Minshall, Dan Garenz and Jerry Gehling.

• In the Albert Lea regular season slow pitch playoffs, the Tribune defeated the Jaycees, 16-13. The Trades and Labor team defeated First Federal, 16-12. Hitting home runs for Trades and Labor were Paul Pierson, Roger Olson and Lowell Sullivan. Bill Malepsy and Tom Hoffman homered for First Federal.

• Three teams were tied for first place in the Albert Lea women’s softball league and in the first playoff game, Home Lumber defeated Piggly Wiggly, 10-9. Home Lumber was led by Alice Peterson and Kathy Estergren with three hits apiece.

 

25 years ago: 1991

• The Albert Lea High School girls’ tennis team was defeated by Winona 6-1 in its season opener. Kelly Lauman at No. 1 singles won her match for the Tigers. ALHS won its second match of the year 4-3 over Fairmont. Winning in singles for the Tigers were Kelly Lauman at No. 1, Sarah Volkenant at No. 2 and Keri Reed at No. 4. Winning at No. 3 doubles were April Hammer and Susie Dilling.

• The Albert Lea Edgewater golf team took second place in the 1991 Minnesota Golf Association State Tournament at the LeSeuer Golf Club. Team members were Troy Neist, Chad Holtan, Chad Cliff, Mike Oothoudt and Bob Richards.

• Gordy Nelson of Albert Lea scored a hole-in-one on the 6th at Green Lea Golf Course.

 

10 years ago: 2006

• The ALHS boys’ soccer team opened its season losing to Winona 4-2. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Matt Clark and Zack McGinnis.

• A goal by Leah Walters was all the ALHS girls’ soccer team needed to win their opening game 1-0 over Rochester Lourdes.

• United South Central lost their season opening tennis match 5-2 to Austin. Inning for the Rebels were Carolyn Schmitz at No. 4 singles and Emma Stenzel and Molly Yokiel at No. 2 doubles.
