Shirley Somage, 1936-2016

Funeral services for Shirley “Joie” Somage will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at LeSueur River Lutheran Church in New Richland. The Rev. Charles Espe will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Friedrich-Bonnerup Funeral chapel in New Richland as well as one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will take place at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in rural Emmons.

Joie Somage went to meet her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2016, at New Richland Care Center. She was 79.

Shirley JoAnne (Trytten) was born Aug. 28, 1936, at home in rural Emmons to Alfred and Emma (Nelson) Trytten. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Swedish Church. She attended rural schools through the eighth grade, and graduated from Keister High School in 1956. She went on to attend cosmetology school in Minneapolis.

On June 30, 1956, Joie was united in marriage to John Somage in Northwood. To this union, four children were born. The couple lived in Hartland for 37 years where they raised their family. John and Joie moved to New Richland, where she continued to live for 22 years.

Joie ran a beauty salon out of her home for 29 years. Joie was very deeply rooted in her faith. She was a lifetime member of Cross of Glory Lutheran Church, Vista Covenant Church and most recently participated in worship services at New Richland Care Center, where she began a close friendship with the Rev. Brian Gegel.

In her free time, she enjoyed baking, cooking and going to garage sales. Joie had a special gift of writing inspirational poetry and tributes. She enjoyed going to her grandchildren’s sporting events. Most importantly, Joie loved her family. Her heart was full when she was with her family.

She is preceded in death by her husband, John; parents Alfred and Emma; mother- and father-in-law Alec and Esther Somage; a brother, Curtis Trytten; and many brothers and sisters-in-law.

Those left to carry on her legacy include her children Susie (Erik) Monson of Bricelyn, Michael (Lynn) Somage of Hartland, Robin Darrington and special friend, Scott Routh, of New Richland and Jane (Darren) Wagner of New Richland; grandchildren Jonathan (Sheena) Monson, Spencer (Betsy) Monson, Luke Monson, Tory (Katie) Somage, Christopher (Alyssa) Somage, Calvin Somage, Taylor Olson, Hayley Darrington, Kari Darrington, Isaac Darrington, Paige Darrington, Alex (Laura) Wagner, Danny (fiancee Kristina Cole) Wagner, Carlie Wagner, Maddie Wagner and Marnie Wagner; great-grandchildren Elliot and Emery Monson, Evan Somage, Bo Hullopeter and Hunter and Nathan Wagner; siblings Muriel Lussier, Lorraine (Ron) Watson, Lois Courrier and Phyllis Hofferber; sisters in-law Shirley Stenseth and Betty Somage; as well as many other loving relatives and friends.
