How did upcoming election come to be?

Having recently returned from three weeks in Europe, I was intrigued by how Europeans view our upcoming election. Their greatest anxiety appears to be over NATO — North Atlantic Treaty Organization. What effect would a Trump victory have on a military alliance, which has provided their national security for nearly 70 years?
Sky News reported on a French government minister who feared Clinton would lead France into another military conflict. The BBC carried an extensive story on Vladimir Putin’s strong support for Trump, questioning how far Russia might go in an attempt to influence our election.
The most interesting comment came from a local German.
“How did it come to be that your choice is between a woman who lies and a man who is crazy?”
Mary Noland may have had it right. Her obituary in the Richmond Times-Dispatch read, “Faced with the prospect of voting for either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, Mary Anne Noland of Richmond chose, instead, to pass into the eternal love of God on Sunday, May 15, 2016, at the age of 68.”
