Tigers come up short in road loss

The Albert Lea Tigers traveled 116 miles west to Worthington, in search of their first victory of the season Friday night.
The Worthington Trojans were coming off a 35-22 win at St. Peter the week before, while the Tigers were looking to avenge a 31-6 loss to Belle Plaine.
Aside from giving up one big play on defense, the Tigers put together a very good performance in a 23-9 loss.
“We played very hard,” said Tigers coach Corey Black. “We gave up one big play on a blown coverage, then we tipped a pass that was caught for a touchdown.”
Penalties hindered the Tigers’ chances to get back into the game.
“We were hampered by penalties all night,” Black said. “That made it hard to establish momentum in the second half.”
Jessie Hernandez led the Tigers rushing attack with 18 carries for 64 yards and a touchdown.
Quarterback Sam Chalmers finished the game 4-18 for 39 yards and an interception, something Black hopes the Tigers can improve in the coming weeks.
“Our passing game and pass protection need to improve for us to be successful,” Black said.
Albert Lea will be on the road one final time before it will have its first home game of the season.
The Tigers will travel to Jordan Friday.
Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
