Lakeview Elementary School went on lockdown two times Monday after police received a report of a teenager with a gun down the street from the school.

Albert Lea police and Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a 15-year-old boy tied to the incident. He was transported to the Freeborn County jail.

According to police, the teenager was initially seen near the 1300 block of Abbott Street. Reports indicated he was seen walking the railroad bed shirtless with a long gun.

Police and Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office deputies reportedly secured a perimeter and canvassed the area from Winter Avenue to Minnesota Highway 13. During the canvass, Lakeview Elementary School was notified of the incident and went into lockdown for about 10 minutes.

After clearing the scene at 11:12 a.m. after the suspect was not found, a second sighting was reportedly provided at 12:39 p.m. in the same area, resulting in Lakeview going into a second temporary lockdown.

An individual wearing a dark shirt carrying what appeared to be a long gun was again observed, the press release stated.

The teenager reportedly raised the weapon, lowered it and placed it on the ground. He then walked west along the railroad toward awaiting officers, the press release stated.

He reportedly explained he was hunting with his Daisy pump-action BB gun.

According to police, it is a gross misdemeanor to brandish a rifle or shotgun in public places.

Lakeview Elementary School Principal Nick Sofio said in a letter that went home to parents Monday afternoon that the teenager never came on the Lakeview campus and at no time were students directly threatened.
