A.L. football team takes down Winona

50 years ago: 1966

• In its first-ever football game, Lea College defeated Bethel College 18-7. Tom Colby scored on a 65-yard punt return and Gary Moore ran for a 26-yard score.

• The Albert Lea High School cross country team improved its season record to 13-1 after defeating Wells, Fairmont and Blooming Prairie. The Tigers won places 1-7 against each team and won each match 15-50.

• The ALHS football team was shut out by the undefeated Austin Packers 13-0. Doyle Freemyer rushed for 59 yards for the Tigers. Albert Lea’s Big Nine Conference record dropped to 1-2-1.

• Quarterback Al Lindeman threw four touchdown passes for Alden-Conger in its 45-12 win over Frost.

25 years ago: 1991

• The United South Central girls’ tennis team defeated ALHS 5-2 by winning all the singles matches. Singles winners for USC were Dayna Groskreutz at No. 1, Angie Nowak at No. 2, Molly Sorenson at No. 3 and Angie Johnson at No. 4. USC won at No. 2 doubles with Jenny Klocek and Mandy Nowak. The Tigers No. 1 doubles team of Keri Reed and Kristen Adams and the No. 3 team of Mindy Davis and April Hammer were victorious.

• The ALHS football team defeated Winona 18-0 for its first win of the year. Jeff VanBeek led the Tigers with 105 rushing yards in 27 carries.

• The ALHS volleyball team defeated Rochester Mayo 3-1 by scores of 15-13, 19-17, 13-15 and 15-13. Laura Bisek had 22 kills, Mollee Ludtke 16 kills and Donelle Jensen was 18-18 serving.

10 years ago: 2006

• The Hans Offsale team won the Maple Island co-ed league regular season and playoffs. Team members were Shelby Tietze, Stacie Thisius, Jerri Mondeel, Davey Villarreal, Emily Reed, Bobbi Rayman, Joey Griebrok, Wade Johnson, Doug DeBoer, Jon Mondeel, Dustin Rayman, Susie Rayman, Jordan Mondeel and Tyler Ziebell.

• The ALHS football team won its homecoming game over Winona 16-9. Matt Morris rushed for 98 yards and Michael Culhane for 46 yards.

• Ryan Wach rushed for 204 yards and scored three touchdowns, and Matt Bremseth had 15 tackles for A-C in its 34-0 win over Madelia.
