A.L. girls’ soccer shuts out Fairmont in playoff game

50 years ago: 1966
• The Albert Lea High School football team defeated Northfield 26-6 to remain undefeated at 5-0. Eric Oslund led the offense with 75 rushing yards on nine carries.
• Al Lindeman completed 5-7 passes for 132 yards for the Alden High School football team in its 52-12 victory over Bricelyn. The Blackhawks raised their season record to 7-0 and their first-place Border League mark to 5-0. The Bricelyn Braves dropped to 4-1 in league play.
• In Region 1 cross country, ALHS placed first with 45 points to second-place Austin with 58 and third-place Northfield with 67. Top place runners for the Tigers were Brendon O’Brian (third), Lawrence Louters (sixth) and Jim Parry (seventh).
25 years ago: 1991
• The Minnesota Twins defeated the Atlanta Braves 5-2 in the first game of the 1991 World Series. Shortstop Greg Gagne and first baseman Kent Hrbek homered for the Twins.
• The Lou-Rich women’s softball team won the regular season and the playoffs of the Western League, placed fourth in District C and finished in eighth place in the Minnesota state tournament. Team members were Cheryl Enderson,Tammy Eggum, Carol Hanson, Tammy Indrelie, June White, Jenny Molden, Pam Tufte, Sherri Gayken, Sheri Opseth, Jodie Eichoff, Julie Meyers, Carolyn Tufte, Kathy Dimit, Michelle Thomas, Jill Gaetze and Sue Nielson.
• Northwood-Kensett defeated Belmond-Klemme 36-7 for its second win of the season. Sophomore Josh Dodd scored two touchdowns and rushed for 103 yards for the Vikings.
10 years ago: 2006
• In the quarterfinal round of Section 2A soccer, the ALHS girls’ team defeated Fairmont 4-0. Scoring goals for Albert Lea were Whitney Wilson (2), Abby Arends and Jenna Christensen.
• The Alden-Conger High School football team defeated Nicollet 66-20 and won the West Division of the Southeast Conference with a 6-0 record. Ryan Wach scored five touchdowns and Ross Hemmingson two for the Knights.
• Tyler Stading scored a touchdown and Cody Hanson scored on a 79-yard interception for Northwood-Kensett in its 14-6 win over Belmond-Klemme.
