Published 9:55 am Thursday, October 6, 2016
The regular monthly meeting of the Cannon Valley Civil War Roundtable will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Faribault Senior Citizens Center, 19 W. Division St., in Faribault.
The topic of discussion will be the United States Dakota War Trials. In 1862, 306 Native Americans were convicted to be hung. Some of their trials lasted as long as 15 minutes. The Lincoln administration narrowed the list down to 39. Thirty-eight were hung the day after Christmas 1862 in Mankato.
The presenter will be John Haymond, a conflict historian and the executive director of the Mower County Historical Society. He has degrees in history from the University of Minnesota and the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Before becoming a historian he served in the United States Army for 21 years, an experience that sparked his interest in 19th century military law and the United States – Dakota War Trials.
The public is invited to attend. There is no charge for the event. Decaf coffee and treats will be provided and a question and answer session is planned.
