Duplicate Bridge Club
Six tables played during Duplicate Bridge Club at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Senior Center in Austin. Results were Barb Engebretson and Orrin Roisen, first place; Barb Rofshus and Lorraine Quinlivan, second place; Lorraine Lippert and Russ Valle, third place; Carolyn Higgins and Cleo Osmundson, fourth place; and Judy Bungum and Dave Solomonson, fifth place.
Five tables of Duplicate Bridge were played at noon Oct. 12 at the Senior Center in Austin. Winners were Joyce Crowe and Millie Siever, first place; Dave Ring and Orrin Roisen, second place; Tom Flarety and Stan Schultz, third place; Vandy Newman and Ron Peters, fourth place; and John Liesen and Rick Stroup, fifth place.
Bridge is a competitive game, open to all. Players come from Austin, Mason City, Albert Lea, Adams and Rose Creek.
Freeborn American Legion Auxiliary
The Freeborn American Legion Auxiliary No. 552 had its meeting on Oct. 15 at the Freeborn Legion hall. President Sandy Anderson called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance and the auxiliary pledge were recited. The secretary and treasurer reports were given and approved. The per capita dues and the junior dues were motioned to be paid and the motion carried.
The group still has three members who have not yet renewed their memberships for this year. Anderson will add a note to the next newsletter.
Plans for the community coffee time event set for Nov. 19 were finalized. Serving will be from 8:30 to 10 a.m. and the meeting will follow at 10 a.m. Pastries, coffee and juice are on the menu and will be served to the public free of charge.
Anderson asked if they were going to send out veteran appreciation cards again this year to the members of the Freeborn American Legion. The group’s reply was yes. Anderson will spearhead the project.
Anderson announced that she has invited both the district and the department presidents to the group’s upcoming events.
Anderson informed members that if anyone is interested in receiving the district newsletter per email that she can send it to their email address. The letter comes once a month.
The next meeting will be at 10 a.m. Nov. 19 following the community coffee time.
Ascension Lutheran Church Women
The Ascension Lutheran Church Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church Association had its regular meeting at 10 a.m. Oct. 9 following worship services. Co-president Lola Evans opened with devotions and led the business meeting.
The secretary’s report was read by Lorraine Schaper and approved. There was no treasurer’s report.
Doris Guenthner reported on the Time and Talent Bazaar, which is set for Nov. 5. The Used-a-Bit Christmas decorations will go to Ascension Missions. Times were adjusted to coffee from 8 to 10:15 a.m. and lunch from 10:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Posters promoting the event were sent to other churches and posted at various places around town.
Jane Pearson presented her written summary report from guest night.
A motion made and was carried to have Carol Rask order an assortment for the bazaar of the fair trade products that support Lutheran World Relief.
Bonnie Jensen gave a report on the different lefse equipment donated by Pat Abreo for Ascension’s lefse making.
A motion made and carried to have an appreciation thank you in conjunction with the group’s thanks offering Nov. 13 to schedule a brunch following church services.
St. John’s upcoming dates for Ascension’s time to serve Sunday coffee and dessert were discussed. Circle chairs were given the information and it was noted that the annual St. John’s fundraiser and bake sale will be April 22, 2017.
The Time and Talent Bazaar is scheduled for Nov. 5; thanks offering Sunday will be Nov. 13; and St. John’s Coffee Sunday will be at 2 p.m. Nov. 20 with Miriam Circle serving.
The next meeting will be Dec. 11 following worship services.
