A.L. boys’ basketball sneaks past Fairmont

50 years ago: 1966

• The Albert Lea High School gymastics team defeated Austin 55.5 to 49.5.

First-place winners for the Tigers were Dan Gasco on the parallel bars, Dick Boyum on the side horse, Dave Vandegrift on the trampoline and Jon Lageson on the rings.

• Named to the All-Big Nine Conference Football team from ALHS were Chuck Slette, Doyle Freemyer, Darrel Gavle and Chuck Jean. Receiving Honorable Mention were Gaylen Ordalen and Kurt Ross.

• The Glenville High School basketball team defeated Rose Creek 45-42. The Trojans were led by Clark Cipra with 15 points and Dick Grinolds with13.

• Bob Prange scored 27 points and Tony Nowak 15 to lead the Wells High School basketball team to a 61-50 victory over Waseca.

25 years ago: 1991

• The ALHS boys’ basketball opened its season with a 71-64 win over Fairmont. The Tigers were led by 15 points by Pete Schmidt and 13 points and 13 rebounds by Chris Boysen.

• The Fairmont girls’ team reversed the outcome by defeating Albert Lea 57-45. Becky Schmidt scored 15 points and Laura Bisek 10 for the Tigers in their season opener.

• Punky Kraft scored 31 points and Leah Fallgatter 30 for Northwood-Kensett in its girls’ basketball win over Rockford.

10 years ago: 2006

• The ALHS boys’ hockey team opened its season with an 8-2 win over Waseca. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Jared Bowman (3), Casey Woodside, Mark Walton, Evan Hegwood, Grant Stadheim and Dustin Arendt (1) goal each.

• Balanced scoring for the ALHS girls’ basketball team in its Big Nine Conference gave them a 73-41 victory. Niki Hendrickson scored 16 points, Ali Demmer 15, Hali Hendrickson 14 and Leah Walters 11.

• Alden-Conger with Sam Hallman scoring 18 points defeated Glenville-Emmons 71-51. Jarrad Knutson of the Wolverines was the game’s leading scorer with 28 points.

• United South Central behind 17 points by Chris Yost opened its basketball season with a 54-52 win over Stewartville.
