A.L. girls’ basketball trounces New Ulm

50 years ago: 1966
• Dan Doty with 20 points and Darrel Gavle with 19 led the Albert Lea High School boys’ basketball team to a 79-51 victory over Faribault.
• The ALHS wrestling team recorded its 16th straight win when it defeated Burnsville, 47-2. Winning by pins for the Tigers were Gerald Bakke at 103 pounds, Larry Wilder at 138 pounds, Larry Torgerson at 165 pounds, Chuck Jean at 175 pounds and Roger Klukow at heavyweight.
• The Bricelyn High School basketball team remained undefeated at 3-0 after defeating Huntley 53-46. The Braves were led by Glen Oelerking with 19 points.
• The Albert Lea hockey team opened its season with a 3-2 win over South St. Paul. Wayne Freemyer, Ray Sorenson and Archie Nelson scored for the Rangers.
• Lake Mills defeated Alden, 60-58, in a high school basketball game. Steve Pederson scored 20 points for the Bulldogs and Allan Lindeman led the Blackhawks with 19 points.
25 years ago: 1991
• The Minnesota Gophers raised its season basketball record to 4-1 after defeating Youngstown State 98-59. Guard Arriel McDonald led the Gophers with 21 points and Dana Jackson had 13.
• The Minnesota Gophers placed fifth in the Maui Invitational Basketball Tournament after defeating Arizona State, 69-37.
• The Minnesota Gophers women’s basketball team was defeated by North Carolina State 108-100 in overtime. The Gophers were led by Carol Ann Shudlick with 26 points and Stacy Carver with 22.
10 years ago: 2006
• With four players scoring in double digits the ALHS girls basketball team were victorious over New Ulm, 60-43. Hali Hendrickson scored 14 points and Ali Demmer, Liz Thompson and Cara Thorn each scored 10 points.
• Haley Johnson and Kaylee Newman each scored 11 points to lead Alden-Conger to 46-38 win over Glenville-Emmons. Ashley Lau scored 21 points for the Wolverines.
• The Northwood-Kensett girls basketball team defeated North Central, 41-32. Leading scorers for the Vikings were Rachel Madsen with 19 and Kate Hartman 14.
• The Northwood-Kensett boys basketball team topped Lake Mills, 49-46. Cody Hanson scored 17 points and Trevor Davidson 16 for the Vikings. Michael Johnson scored 14 points for the Bulldogs.
